Hello lovelies,
Welcome to the official Black Crowns in Law blog! My name is Cahlia Nelson, the founder of BCIL, and I am so excited to have you here. I am a Canadian university student, and I am passionate about both Black excellence and the law. I am an aspiring lawyer, and I started this company to share my passion and create a community for aspiring Black and POC lawyers. This is a space to advocate for diversity in the legal field and celebrate Black excellence in law. This blog is here to empower and uplift aspiring Black legal professionals.
To begin, I would like to give some context to the name – Black Crowns in Law. I draw inspiration from one of my all-time favourite authors – Caleb Azumah Nelson, a British-Ghanaian writer and photographer. Not only do I love this author for our shared initials, C.A.N, but his contemporary, poetic writing drew me in with his two best-selling novels, Open Water and Small Worlds.
When trying to come up with a name for this company, I wanted to choose a name that represented my identity and my mission. In Nelson’s book Small Worlds, he poetically depicts an afro as a Black crown. Since I am a Black woman with an afro—my own Black crown—I was able to relate to this instantly. This is where Black Crowns in Law was born. This blog serves as a platform for BIPOC people who want to work in the legal field, Black Afro or not 😂 I hope you find helpful resources, inspiration, and, most importantly a community to support you on this journey.
I look forward to writing more and expanding this page to other media platforms to grow this community. Thank you for joining and be sure to tune in for more soon!
Until next time,
Cahlia
