The series of celebrating Black legal trailblazers continues! Today, we explore the life of a Canadian judge who has made a significant impact on the legal field. While this series commenced in Black History Month, it is important to share stories of Black leaders all year long. Let’s learn more about Judge Corrine Sparks.
Corinne Sparks was the very first Black female judge to serve on the Nova Scotia Judiciary. This series has focused on the many “firsts” in Canadian legal history. I am excited to share yet another one!
Sparks started in a private practice law firm and was then appointed to the Nova Scotia Family Court in 1986. Her tenure lasted over 34 years. During this time, she set a standard and example for many future lawyers and judges.
Her work on the Commonwealth Judicial Education Committee and African Nova Scotian Access to Justice Judicial Committee showcases her commitment to breaking barriers and mentorship opportunities. She is also very active in her community, constantly supporting and uplifting those around her.
Discovering the contributions made by Judge Corrine Sparks to the judicial system was a highlight of this series. It is so inspiring to see pioneers in the legal industry lead successful careers. They serve as a blueprint for those to come.
Take the time to reflect on what your impact will be.
Stay tuned for more important stories of trailblazing Canadian legal figures.
